Event Type

John Taylor (Tonbridge School) will deliver a talk entitled Co-operative Classics and Homeric Headmasters, for which he has kindly provided the following abstract:

Reflections on the past, present and future of Classics teaching, after thirty years in the classroom. How we got here and why it matters. The ever-sinking ship that stays afloat. Support networks, adult learners and public interest. Ballpark statistics and the feeding of the Ten Thousand. The inductive/seductive Cambridge Latin Course we love to hate. Fitting in Greek with the Sainsbury’s offer. Inspiration and provocation in writing textbooks. Confronting difficulty. Can we trust exam boards? Would GCSE be better without set texts? (and other forbidden questions). Beyond the classroom: theatres, summer schools, classical lands. Training the next generation of teachers. Where shall we be in ten years’ time?.
