naoise1Dr Naoise MacSweeney (University of Leicester) will give a talk entitled ‘The Deviant Daughters of Miletus: Foundation Myths in the Greek City’.

Dr MacSweeney has kindly provided the following abstract:

The origins of most Greek cities are shrouded in myth – wrapped up in stories of legendary foundation. Even more confusing, many Greek cities had more than one foundation myth, and more than one story purporting to relate how the city came into being. How should we deal with this mythic plurality? How can we rationalise these conflicting stories and variant versions? This talk will address the question of foundation myths in the ancient Greek city, examining as a case study the rich traditions and bawdy tales linked to the foundation of Miletus.
