Dr Tom Rasmussen (University of Manchester) will be talking on George Dennis, the Etruscans and beyond for which he has kindly provided the following abstract:

George Dennis died in obscurity in London in 1898, fifty years after the first publication of his magisterial two-volume Cities and Cemeteries of Etruria. Spending most of his long life abroad he explored many parts of Etruscan Italy, held down consular posts in various parts of the Mediterranean, excavated Greek cemeteries in Sicily and North Africa, and investigated ancient sites in Asia Minor. This talk will discuss why Dennis is still important to archaeologists and a wider public today, in addition to giving a sideways glance at another, earlier English writer on the Etruscans, Elizabeth Caroline Hamilton Gray.

The meeting will take place in room A7 of the Samuel Alexander Building.
