Please join us for the second annual Whitehead lecture, in which Prof Greg Woolf (Institute of Classical Studies) will give a talk entitled ‘How cosmopolitan was imperial Rome?’

Prof Woolf has kindly provided the following abstract:

‘We often think of imperial Rome as similar to the great capitals of modern imperial nation states, or even like London, Paris, New York or Melbourne today. But how cosmopolitan and multicultural was the ancient city of Rome. I will draw on migration theory, comparative urbanism, Juvenal, Samuel Johnson and demography to raise a few doubts about the cosmopolitanism of the Eternal City.’

All are welcome to the following wine reception.
