Please join us for the third annual Whitehead lecture, in which Prof Michael Wood (Manchester) will give a talk entitled ‘In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great: Further Reflections on an Epic Journey’.

The speaker has kindly provided the following abstract:

‘In the late 90s Michael Wood journeyed on the ground from Greece to India through the Near East and Central Asia following Alexander’s route for a BBC TV series which has been seen all over the world and which produced a number one best selling book since translated into several languages. More recently he had the opportunity to revisit a number of the key sites in the story, notably in Northern Iraq and Syria, just before the current crisis. In this illustrated lecture, with close attention to the sources, Michael will take a fresh look at the main events and turning points, one of which, the battle of Gaugamela, Alexander’s greatest victory, he proposes may be located on the ground with certainty for the first time. The talk will also mention the aftermath and the long term interaction of Greek culture in Asia. It will be illustrated with slides and a film clip.’

All attendees are welcome to join us for a wine reception following the talk.

This event is free but spaces are limited so please register via our Eventbrite page.
