After the success of last year’s Year 12 Graeco-Roman Egypt event,  the Classics department and Manchester Museum have decided to deliver a similar workshop to students this year on the 17th of June and we would love as many students as possible to be able to attend again this year. It is aimed at Year 12 students and, where possible, their class teachers to give them an experience of studying Classics and Ancient History at Manchester and a good look round the Manchester Museum. The details of the event are as follows.

Aims of the day:

  • To gain an understanding of Graeco-Roman Egyptian culture
  • To think about what life would have been like in the Ancient World, in comparison to our own.
  • To learn about papyri.
  • To experience Humanities and especially Classics & Ancient History at the University of Manchester
  • To understand the importance of the museum collections.

What it will involve:

  • A short introduction from a University specialist on Egyptian objects and particularly on the University’s enormous papyri collection
  • Working in small groups with current PhD and Masters students to experience what real university seminars are like.
  • Handling sessions with a group leader, where the students will be able to handle several, completely genuine, ancient objects, most of which are over 2000 years old
  • Free Lunch!
  • Spending time in the Ancient Worlds gallery, finding more objects to consider.
  • Working with an Ipad to create a video about the experiences of the day and Egyptian culture

This study day is completely free.

Please see here for a copy of the itinerary.

Places on the event are limited so please contact Leo Mitchell (leo.mitchell@postgrad.manchester.ac.uk) as soon as possible if you are interested in attending.
