The 2019 Reading competition details are as follows.

The Manchester Classical Association’s Latin and Greek Reading Competition 2019 will be held at Stockport Grammar School on Wednesday 27th March at 2.00p.m. (arrival from 1.30 p.m.).

Due to the increasing popularity of the event and time restrictions, it has become necessary to restrict the number of entries in some categories.

Categories and entry conditions are listed below:

Beginners’ Latin Pairs Maximum 2 pairs per school
Intermediate Latin Pairs Maximum 2 pairs per school
GCSE Latin Maximum 3 individuals per school
GCSE Greek No maximum
A-Level Latin No maximum; Individual competitors may perform either prose or verse passage
A-Level Greek No maximum
Classics in Translation Maximum 3 individuals per school
  • Competitors will read from an unmarked copy of their text on the day.
  • Prizes in the form of book tokens from the Classical Association will be awarded in each category.
  • Individual winners one year cannot take part in the same category in any subsequent year.

The passages for this year’s competition are available here: Reading Competition Texts 2019

After the announcement of the winners of each section at the final plenary session, the first-prize winners will perform their recitations in front of everyone. There will also be refreshments, for which we hope everyone will stay. The proceedings will then end at 4.30 p.m.

The judges will look in equal measure both for technical competence and for understanding and involvement. An understanding of the passage is shown through phrasing, characterisation and reflection of mood.

Please come along and experience the unique quality of the afternoon’s entertainment. The judges are always encouraging and helpful.

An entry fee of £1 per person will be charged to encourage commitment to the day and to cover the refreshments – cheques can be sent to the Manchester Classical Association using the details on the application form.

Please complete the application and competitor details form by Wednesday 13th March 2019; this schedule is important for the smooth running of the event and late applications will not be accepted.

We look forward to seeing you and your pupils in March.
